# Delete a document

> Moves a document to Trash (soft-delete) by default - the bytes are kept and
`POST /v1/api/documents/{id}/restore` brings it back. Pass `?purge=true` to
delete it permanently; the stored file content is then removed only when no
other document in the workspace references the same bytes, so deduplicated
copies are preserved. Only the document's owner may delete it (others receive
403; an unknown document returns 404). Returns 204 No Content. Requires the
documents:write scope.
